Swimming Badges and Awards Badges and awards help children of all ages from toddlers to advanced teenagers improve their standard of swimming and water safety. All badges comply with the International Swimming & Water Safety Standards (ISWSS). Click on this link to find out more about Starfish Awards on the STA's website. Swimming Badge Achievement Ladder STARFISH Awards - (Babies and Toddlers) The STARFISH Awards are suitable for babies as young as 6 months to swimming, The series is undertaken in shallow water with the guardian in the water holding and supporting the baby. Buoyancy aids may be worn but they are unnecessary as the guardian is holding the baby throughout. First Steps Series - Learn to Swim in 7 steps The Stanley Awards have recently been launched as the First Steps Series. This replaces, Rubberdubbers in 2008 and the Teddy Bear, Tadpole and Pool Frog Series in 2004. The First Steps Series is designed to teach children aged 2 years+ to learn to swim. After completing the 7 awards in the Stanley Series, pupils progress to the Octopus Series. Older children will probably wish to learn to swim using the Goldfish Series. The existing Starfish Series for the under 2’s will remain unchanged. The First Steps Series has been designed to provide more incentive awards during the important early stages in learning to swim. Reg 1, the first step award, should normally be achieved during the first session that a pupil attends to encourage continuation. Learn to Swim Series (Younger children between 4-8 years) This series is designed for those who start to learn to swim at/almost at primary school, Pupils progress through 4 levels - Octopus, Goldfish, Angelfish and Shark. Within each of these levels there are 3 awards. 1. Octopus Level 1, 2 & 3 2. Goldfish Level 1, 2 & 3 3. Angelfish Level 1, 2 & 3 4. Shark Level 1, 2 & 3 On completion of Level 4, pupils will be able to: 1. Swim 100 metres Perform all four strokes 2. Perform a dive from the poolside 3. Have an understanding of their own ability and basic water safety Advanced Skills Series 2A Water Safety skills The Personal Survival Series (Teenagers). This series develops survival and rescue skills. Pupils who achieve both Level 7 Awards - Gold Advanced Swimmer and Gold Water Safety Skills may progress to the Ultimate STA Award, the Platinum Award. 2B Advanced Swimmer This series develops swimming technique, speed, stamina and other water skills.
